Cancer is a deeply shocking and frightening diagnosis at any age. So it is hard to imagine the effect it has on a child who sees life as long and exciting. This is what happened to a very bright and popular young girl called Lynsey Ivison. At the age of 9 she was told that she had a tumour in the pelvic area.
From the beginning she was aware of how serious cancer could be and doctors kept her fully informed at every stage of her treatment. She was treated at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, one of the leading centres for the treatment of childhood cancers in England.
From the day she was diagnosed as having cancer, Lynsey was never self-pitying. She was also concerned that her family and friends should not feel sad. Her determination that life should go on as normally as possible meant that she kept her interests; dancing, swimming and family cycle rides. Despite missing lots of school, Lynsey continued to work on her studies. Her hard work and natural ability led to her securing a sought-after place at The Perse School for Girls in Cambridge.
She was undoubtedly an inspiration to other children through her courage and determination not to give in to the disease. When she died age 11 on 27th April 1990, it seemed tragic and unfair to the many people who knew, loved and admired her.
Throughout her illness, Lynsey and her family, friends and school had raised money for the Children's Ward at Addenbrooke's Hospital. It was after what proved to be their last family holiday together at Center Parcs in February 1990, that they decided to raise funds to help other families with a terminally-ill child to have a similar holiday.
The foundations for the trust were laid before Lynsey died. After her death it was named THE LYNSEY IVISON TRUST. It was decided that it's aims should be as Lynsey had wished. Simply to enable families to share a special holiday as the Ivisons had done.
Your generosity and support goes a long way to keeping Lynsey's wish, so please contact us of you are organising or taking part in an event and you would like to donate to this fantastic trust.
